A Weber grill, a vacuum cleaner, a little sand...

It does look like fun.

However, as the feller sez: "Do not try this method of glassmaking at home. Wear a dust mask when handling silica sand." Don't try it. Be careful.

Here's the article.

  1. Very dramatic, but he's doing it the hard way. A Bunsen burner will melt glass.

  2. True, but isn't that akin to observing that 'tis easier to buy duck at the meat market than to go duck hunting?

Paraphrasing Ortega y Gasset: "I do not make glass in order to make an ornament, I make an ornament in order to have made glass."

  3. Use the appropriate tool for the job. If you're going duck hunting, use a shotgun, not a .50-caliber machine gun.

  4. I'm not sure that a Weber qualifies as a .50-caliber machine gun.

    More like a bola.

A Weber is likely closer to what the Egyptians used, or maybe the Greeks. Modern materials, but an open furnace and a bellows.
