Gun Control: H.R. 861 & H.R. 73. Finally...

...a couple federal gun control laws I could support wholeheartedly.

But I won't hold my breath.

It isn't even worth writing my Congresscritters or Senators from the People's Republic of Hawaii. There is no way they would agree to regulate guns and gun owners the same way we do cars and drivers.

H.R.861
To amend title 18, United States Code, to provide a national standard in accordance with which nonresidents of a State may carry concealed firearms in the State.

H.R.73
To protect the right to obtain firearms for security, and to use firearms in defense of self, family, or home, and to provide for the enforcement of such right.

Good question. Anytime someone tries to buy a gun from a gun dealer, federal law already requires a criminal background check before the sale is completed. It is a felony for a dealer not to do so. Applications for state permits to carry concealed also require criminal background checks.

It is already a felony for a convicted felon to possess a firearm, and it is illegal for anyone who has been adjudged mentally incompetent to have a gun. It is also a separate felony to lie on the paperwork.

So, the requirements for gun ownership and carry are considerably more stringent than they are for owning or operating a deadly vehicle on the streets.

Thanks for the question. TTB
