Politicians on Gun Control

This is an interesting site with direct quotes from various politicians on a variety of issues, including guns. The link takes you to Rudy Giuliani, but Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney, Barack Obama and several others are available if you scroll all the way down. It covers taxes, free trade, and quite a few other issues.

It's interesting that several pols claim to support the 2nd Amemndment, then go on to attack the right to own or bear arms in ways they would never attack the 1st. Or would they?

You made some comments in another venue about drums of gasoline stored in the yard constituting a threat to neighbors. Do guns and ammo constitute enough of a threat to justify restrictions on the 2nd amendment?

I'll say: That depends.

I don't see either the Constitution or libertarianism as religions, so I am more concerned with systems which maximise benefits from my point of view than I am with achieving ideological purity.

Someone else's point of view is less important to me, tho as a practical matter that someone else needs to perceive sufficient bennies to refrain from disrupting mine. Hence politics.

Do guns and ammo next door constitute a threat? It depends: Is the neighbor a paranoid schitzophrenic with a history of violence, or a more or less "normal" person? Are there 50-75 guns and 30,000 thousand rounds of ammo, or is it eighty tons of RPG and incendiary/high explosive ammo and maybe some dynamite and detonators sitting around unsecured, unprotected.

Nearly anything can pose some threat: the neighbor might decide to drive his car thru our house, or come over with a kitchen knife and cut our throats, but they don't normally constitute enough of a threat to take them away. Still, if the guy is a violent schitzophrenic, I think reasonable people can take that into account when deciding if the guy and his inanimate objects do constitute enough of a threat to abridge his rights.

So what was the point of your original post? You and Rudy both favor reasonable limitations on gun ownership. Did you want him to stop mentioning the 2nd Amendment?
