Surviving in Siberia for 40 Years

Smithsonian magazine has an interesting article about a small family which escaped Soviet anti-Christian persecution by fleeing into the wilderness of Siberia. They stayed unnoticed for 40 years, with only the tools and clothes they started with and could make from scratch in the forest. They were so isolated they did not even know there had been a Second World War, much less that people had walked on the moon.

The Battle of Athens, Tennessee, aka The McMinn County War

1946: returning Tennessee war vets used rifles, Thompson submachine guns, Molotov Cocktails, and dynamite bombs to oust criminal county officials who refused to be voted out, and who also had hit an elderly black would-be voter in the face with brass knuckles, then, as he fled, shot him in the back.

This is one of the lesser known events where a heavily armed citizenry came in handy. National news companies covered it, but were not amused.

Funny that it doesn't get more press... I guess they are still considered a Bad Example of what armed citizens can do to corrupt Democrats.

American Heritage Magazine has the story.

Unintended Consequence: With Driverless Cars, the Cost of Car Bombs Will Collapse

My prediction: Driverless car and truck technology will collapse the car bombers' cost of detonating car bombs. Driverless car and truck technology, now being tested in a couple states, will take the biggest cost component out of suicide car/truck bombs: the driver.

Program your vehicle's guidance system, and release it. For that matter, release half a dozen at once. Hertz or Avis will pick up the second biggest cost components, though they won't be happy about the condition in which they are returned.

Oh, great.

Thanks to DMS for the comment which sparked the depressing thought.
