Thomas Sowell on the Federal Shutdown

So far as Thomas Sowell is concerned, the federal shutdown is entirely Barack Obama's choice.

Obama Closes the Vietnam Memorial

Why not?
on Friday a group of Vets decided to storm the barrycades erected by the Obama administration at the Vietnam Memorial
As one of the commentors said:
This Barry guy is a small, vindictive, petulant child in an adult sized body.
And that Barry guy has all the power we have delegated to his predecessors, plus that which he has seized himself.

It's the Chicago Way.

Submit or else.

Obama Closes the Ocean

Is the President insane, or just a total loser in power?
Just before the weekend, the National Park Service informed charter boat captains in Florida that the Florida Bay was "closed" due to the shutdown. Until government funding is restored, the fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open ocean. Fishing is also prohibited at Biscayne National Park during the shutdown.
The Park Service will also have rangers on duty to police the ban. Of access to an ocean.
I begin to understand why these power freaks want to disarm the American people.

Donald Rumsfeld Interview

Lee Smith has an interesting account in the Weekly Standard of David Samuels' interviews with Donald Rumsfeld.
What seems to bother Rumsfeld most is his sense that America is a country in steep decline – which is a word that he used more than once. While he thinks that Obama’s Syria policy is a fig leaf for a disaster, he actually seemed less focused on specific policy choices than on his sense that the socio-economic foundation of American power is disintegrating. Without sustained American economic strength, neither American threats nor American offers of friendship are likely to carry much weight with the rest of the world.

It's worth a read. Clearly Rumsfeld has a low opinion of President Obama, and not happy about President Bush's approach to Islamism.

The Insanity Continues

A police officer who dropped off his daughter at her Phoenix elementary school was asked by the school’s principal not to wear his uniform to the school because other parents were concerned that he was carrying a gun
Amazing.

The educational lesson which should be learned from these incidents is: People in responsible positions are violent fools, and we are fools to submit to them.

Wisconsin: 200,000 Concealed Carry Licenses Issued

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:
Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced Tuesday that permit number 200,000 was printed Monday at the Department of Justice’s secure processing center in downtown Madison.

Wisconsin became the 49th state to license people to carry concealed weapons in 2011 with the passage of Act 35. The law took effect Nov. 1 that year and Van Hollen announced extra staffing to handle the expected rush of applicants.

Van Hollen said the DOJ continues to receive 500 to 1,000 applications a week.
If the Democrats who misgovern the state of Hawaii want to stop a mass shooting in a shopping mall like the one in Kenya, they should follow suit.

Instead, they will smugly continue to make Hawaii a target rich Victim Disarmament Zone.

NYC: Motorcyclists Attack Couple With Baby in SUV

Check out the video at the bottom. The West Side Highway goes past my old apartment on West 108th Street, a couple blocks west. This apparently started around 125th street and ran north. There is nothing to indicate what, if anything, provoked the initial motorcyclist to swerve in front of the SUV and hit the brake, but after that the SUV driver was smart enough to use the vehicle as a battering ram. However, he failed to lock the doors, and got off the highway into street traffic, and apparently neither he nor wife immediately called the cops to say they were under attack. Very lucky they got off so well, but holy Shiite.

Yikes.

Mayor Bloomberg and all university campus security officers would suggest the couple should have defended themselves by peeing in their pants. Which they may well have done.

UPDATE: Follow up here. One of the bikers has been arrested, the SUV driver has not been charged with anything so far.

UPDATE II: More here. Apparently there was no initial provocation by the SUV: The motorcyclists just wanted the highway to themselves, and were willing to bash the SUV to do so.

UPDATE III: Well, surprise, surprise:
Mieses (The motorcyclist injured when the SUV escaped the initial 'accident'. TTB) was recently arrested in Andover, Mass., for driving with a revoked license. According to police and records with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, Mieses hasn't had a valid license or permit to drive in the state since 1999. He also never applied for a motorcycle license.

The records show that in June he was named a habitual offender and his right to drive in the state was revoked until 2017. It isn't clear if he had been licensed in any other state. His attorney had no comment.

Lien (the SUV driver) has no prior arrests.
